Customer Review: The Celts have given us so much;especially in the Arts.

This is a wonderful addition to any collection of Celtic Art.It is a book of Celtic Design motifs with an accompaning CD-ROM. There are 223 designs in the book and on the disc.It is a Clip Art book and gives permission for freedom of use.The designs are presented on 48, 8 1/2" X 11" pages;and all are B&W.The sizes vary from about 2"X 2" to about 5" X 6".All the designs are very simple when compared to the great complexity that is usually found in any book of Celtic motifs. They are all line drawings as represented in the photograph on the cover which,by the way, indicates the complexity found in the collection.

In the collection you will find borders, elaborate spirals, weaves, birds, beasts, mermaids, knots wreaths and all sorts of fanciful creatures. However, unlike many books on Celtic Art ,there are no Alphabets. Like I said, the motifs are simple, but a great book to get started with using or understanding this art form.

Also there is absolutely no text in the book,no instructions on how to construct this artwork and no history or background whatsoever on this art.

Therefore don't expect from this book anything but what it is;a Clip Art book and CD-ROM of 223 motifs. If you are looking for more, there are many other books available such as those excellent ones by George Bain.

Customer Review: Excellent source for ideas

This is an excellent source of design ideas. I have recently started working in polymer clay and hope to start also with metal clay, so I was casting about for ideas and came across this book and CD of Celtic art motifs.

I am very fond of the basic knotted designs of the Halstadt culture which tends to be very curvilinear geometric, and over half of the designs in this book are Halstadt in style (as opposed to the later La Tène period with designs that incorporate stylized animals into the Celtic knot motif. For those who prefer the latter, check Celtic Designs in the same collection.)

The CD was easily installed on my computer, easy to open and navigate. It took me a little time to refamiliarize myself with the clip art style. I haven't used it since it came on floppy disks! This was very much easier to do.
